Dr. Bruce Vermeer

Professor of Psychology

Dr. Bruce Vermeer serves as professor of psychology at ͹Ƶ.

A clinician at heart, Vermeer brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in clinical practice, as well as the use of behavioral interventions related to neurocognitive disorder (dementia) to Dordt’s Psychology department.

Vermeer’s areas of expertise include geriatric neuropsychology, dementia assessment and intervention, and the interface between psychology and medicine. His research focuses on the implications of various models of the soul for the discipline of psychology and for our broader understanding of human anthropology. He is particularly interested in how these frameworks can inform holistic approaches to mental health care and deepen our understanding of the human condition.

Vermeer teaches courses that span topics such as biopsychology, lifespan development, ethics, and counseling theories.

Grateful for the ways the Lord has called and equipped him to train new generations of Christian healthcare professionals, Vermeer is passionate about equipping students with knowledge, skills, and dispositions to care for clients holistically, “that is, as fellow image bearers of our Creator who struggle with disorders and illnesses that reflect our fallen human condition,” adds Vermeer.

Outside of the classroom, Vermeer serves as committee chair on the Art Committee and on the ͹Ƶ Nursing Advisory Board. He previous served as committee chair on the Research & Scholarship Council.

In his free time, Vermeer enjoys photography, travel, music, fine art, and sharing time with family.
